Ski season summary:
VT - Not a great season. When it was good it was good and then two days later it rained. On a scale of 10 it was a 4.
Crested Butte. This mountain is great! Should return. Gunnison is an hour each way by bus. Maybe try and find something closer. Town of Crested Butte?
Summit county in early April was great for third year in a row. Last week of March in Utah and first two weeks of April in summit county seems to work well.

Winter routes:
Jakes->Chama->Loki
Left at Christmas tree, Paradise Pass. Cleared far down including trail to left of drainage.
Can go down at opening later on. Go to flats and then take left to go back up to x-mas tree.

2/11/21
Update on Stowe stats: Last winter 19/20 everything shut down around 3/15 due to pandemic.

8/4/18
Maine things to look into: Gulfhegus (sp?) waterfall gorge hike.
Alagash river? Rent canoes. Multi day canoe and camping adventure.

4/21/18
Went from Stowe x-country center up Bruce trail. This comes out at the top of nosedive. A good loop in the winter would be to ski up the toll road and then ski down the Bruce trail. Bruce trail is steep and reasonably wide. Would be a good downhill. Bruce trail is on left if you are going up toll road just before top of nose dive. Look for views of Camels Hump to the left and you can see wide trail heading down in the direction of Camels Hump (South). Also, ski the ridge! If there is enough snow the ridge is great and there are a number of places about half way across to go down. Very nice skiing up there on a sunny day.

7/29/17
LT N from Rt 2 in Richmond. Mice new trail. Still dirt. Went up to Harringtons view and back. 14 miles rt. Bolton mtn is another 3 miles past Harrington view so that would be a long one. Good trail for just a walk in the woods. Not crowded and good surface.

7/26/17
CH - Forest City to LT to just below tree line. Over on plane trail to Monroe. Up/down CH and back down Monroe 2 miles to cut over (1 mile) back to Forest city. 8 miles? Nice loop and good walking. No Burrows!

5/6/17
Skiing at Stowe. Still top to bottom snow on Nose Dive. Other things to do these days but will probably go at least one more time.

4/9/17
Something to remember for next year. Went to left of Sterling lift at top and got onto LT north. Headed up to lean to and went behind lean to. Stay on relatively flat ground. Up two or more small hills that need side stepping. Many options to left for skiing. End up coming down onto Shuttle. Shuttle has good woods also just past ravine. We were looking at the knob and where we skied from shuttle when we went into woods. Woods is open with multiple options. You come out just at small trail that goes to where Shakedown comes out. After going a little past shakedown you can go in the woods again and get to knights revenge and that area.

3/25/17
Snow has been great from 3/15 until 3/25. The 4 foot storm 3/15 and then this week there were a few 6 inch storms. Today was great at Smuggs with 6 inches of new snow from last night. All trails open and everything skiing well. Light traffic since it appears people have given up on skiing for the most part. Tomorrow will be good also but then it looks like rain Monday. After that it will likely be Spring skiing days only. You never know but this looks like the last of the winter skiing.

2/14/17
Amazing day at Sugarbush. Julie, John, Kris, Paul. $14 valentines day lift tickets. No crowds. Ski on the lifts. It snowed 1+ feet Sunday into Monday. All the lifts of consequence were closed on Monday except Castel Rock due to high winds. We arrived early on Tue and it was a powder day. First two runs in Paradise woods off of heavens gate. Deep powder in the woods and great skiing. The snow was great all day. Skied the Mall and Gangstas woods off of Super Bravo lift. At the end of the day we went to the North Lynx lift. Different view over there and some easier runs. Still good snow at the end of the day and good to end on something easier as we were all pretty tired at that point.

2/7/17
Skiing at Smuggs. Nice 4-6 of light powder. Ski into 3 mountain glades (can get off at mid station) and stay left. Cut across lift line below large rock on lift line. Head into woods on skiers left. Cut right after a while to go back into the woods (knights revenge woods). Can stay in woods from 3 mountain all the way to bottom of mountain. Another good run on Sterling. Go down pipeline past turn to go to black bear. Woods on right that keep going pretty far down. Also went into woods I have been in before pretty far down drifter. Hadn't been there in a while. Something to check out again.

1/8/17
Carse road skiing. Really pretty poor. Need more snow. Up high there was snow but crust on top. Some of it was OK but generally not good right now.

1/2/17
Water in ear diving in Costa Rica. Reduced hearing and water would not come out. Turned out to be wax in ear. Nurse said a few drops of baby oil in ear will help.

12/4/16
No snow in the valley but surprisingly good snow in the mtns. Went to Smuggs and skied 1/2 day in good snow. Thin base but no ice and 6 inches of powder all day. Trails in the AM and closed trails later on. Then x-country skied on the notch road which was in good shape also. Good snow and no ice.

11/23, 11/25,11/26
Good x-country skiing at Bolton. 1 foot at base and 2 feet up high. Winter conditions day before Thanksgiving and then warmer Fri and Sat with some Spring skiing.

10/12/16
Up Mad River past Sugarbush North and back. Noticed that to x-country ski up Mad River should start going up single and then cut right beyond the double chair. Cross back under double half way up double and go to mid single mid station. Then up easiest way for 2nd half of mountain. The first half can be pretty gradual with this big traverse.

10/1/16
Round trip to Burnt Rock - 11 miles. Nice trail with little erosion. This trail gets little use.

8/21/16
Mansfield - Wampahoofus and down frost. Windy and clouds blowing around at the top. Nice walk down Frost with wind and lots of exposed areas. Good loop option.

8/6/16
Two days of Laser sailing. The first was 10-20. Very gusty and shifty. Nothing to do but survive for a bit and then go in. Knocked over once. The second day was steady wind which built from 10 to 20. 10-15 is optimum for me on the Laser. Above 15 and upwind is doable but downwind is crazy. You can flip either way and you role with speed. The one I did this day was a role to the lee with the boat going a little further after I fell out. What I learned is that you really don't want to be out there above 15. Of course you can't predict the wind. No one can it seems. Second day wind while I was out there:

4/6/16
From S Lincoln road went up Cooley Glen trail to LT North. Went up Mt Grant which has views to South of Breadloaf wilderness. Saw a ski area which must be Killington? It would be another 3.5 miles to Lincoln gap but I turned around just after Mt Grant. Cooley Glen trail is nice and follows the New Haven river for about half of it.

3/14/16
Green Acres is the place to be.
Farm livin' is the life for me.
Land spreadin' out so far and wide
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.

New York is where I'd rather stay.
I get allergic smelling hay.
I just adore a penthouse view.
Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

...The chores.
...The stores.
...Fresh air.
...Times Square

You are my wife.
Good bye, city life.
Green Acres we are there.

1/24/16 - Up to Devils Dishpan then down into Stowe trails some, up Burt to Sky Top. Looking at ADK's from Sky top? Great snow except first part going up to dish pan. Avoid that next weekend unless we get some significant snow. Maybe Bald Hill next weekend?

1/18/16 - Something to keep an eye on in years to come. Wilderness lift was closed this weekend. x_country skied on that side and also connected with upper x-country trails. Great snow (powder) but thin base so they didn't open it to the masses.

2016 - Smugglers Notch. Bash Badge Plus ($200)
12/11/15 ($0) Spring day. Good Spring skiing on 4 trails. Smugglers Alley was preferred way down.
01/07/16 ($15) Thin cover on non snow making trails. Sterling had 3/4 of the trails open. M1 open but only one way down off top (blue square). Skiing was good (no ice) but snow needed to really open up the mtn.
01/20/16 ($15) Powder day. M1 was closed the previous day. 8+ inches of powder and very few people so fresh tracks most of the day. Trails opened as the day progressed. Colder temps, maybe 15 at the top? Woods skiing with a few obstacles.
02/01/16 Spring skiing again. 45 degrees. M1 closed due to wind. Sterling had Spring snow with Smugglers Alley being the run of the day. Supposed to be 45 and rain 2 days from now. If that happens it will be a reset. Trails with no snow making were thin.
02/23/16 OK snow on top half of mountain. Docs and FIS were good. Thin base. Docs was rocks and snow. Bottom of mountain was hard and fast. Not a great day but I had fun and for this year it was OK. It has been raining every week with some snow in the mountains. No base buildup yet and Spring skiing will be very quick if this keeps up.
03/09/16 Good Spring skiing. FIS all the way down, Docs. Still thin base except trails like FIS with a lot of snow making. Temps in the 50's. Will not last long.
03/16/16 Good Spring skiing. Few trails. FIS. Docs closed. Smugglers Alley and one other trail on Sterling.
03/30/16 Last day. Nice winter/Spring day. 3 inches of snow up high and Spring skiing toward the end of the day. FIS to Docs fun. Upper docs closed. Not many trails open but what was open was good.

12/19/15 - Bolton - Up past cabin and down usual ski way (hiking this time) to Eagles nest. Instead of turning left onto tellemark went right up hill on Fox Hollow. This went to Goat path. Took goat path to trail that went up to LT. Took LT North to Haringtons view. Good view of Bolton downhill mtn and Mansfield. Saw Moose about 1/4 mile before Harington view! No snow in the mountains and Bolton downhill isn't going to open any time soon.

11/29/15 - Up Mt Ellen ski trails to LT South. Past Castlerock and Heavens gate to Mt Abe. 5.5 hours RT. Stopped and checked out plane crash just before Mt Abe summit.

11/27/15 - Up Bolton ski area to Heavenly highway to Ravens wind to Bolton Mtn. Over Bolton mtn to Mt Mayo. Mt Mayo has some views of Bolton mtn and the lake. Metal stake at the top. Also went to Mt Mayo from Stevensville road on 11/14/15 so this part of LT has been explored.

11/26/15 - LT South from Middlebury gap to Bread loaf mtn. Went about 14 miles RT. Nice trail in the woods but no big views. Went to Skylight lodge which has a nice pond.

11/01/15 - LT North from new bridge over Winooski. Goes around rock climbing cliff and is fairly steep for the first 1/2 mile. After that it could be good x-country skiing in the winter. The trail switches back and has pretty good pitch for skiing. Only made it in 2-3 miles so needs more exploring.

10/31/15 - Bolton -  trail recently made between trail to skiers right of wind mill to top of hill behind Wilderness lift.

10/24/15 - Up road to left of Sterling lift (Smuggs) and connected with LT above Sterling Pond. Trail goes right near top of lift. Going down blue square from Madonna, just past left turn to Docs and FIS, trail turns left into woods. If following blue square in winter look for cairn and post on right pretty far down. Could go onto LT and then maybe ski down Morse near top of Morse. Climbed Madonna, Morse, and Whiteface. ~14 miles. Views going to Whiteface but only a small view East at top. Lots of up/downs on way to Whiteface.

9/26/15 - Hike from App gap to Mt Ellen and back. ~10 miles round trip. Could have used gloves in the AM. Top of Mad River was <40 degrees with some wind.

9/12/15 - J24 North Americans in Maine. Launch at Handy Boat (Falmouth ME?). Racing from Portland Yacht Club. Stayed on Cousins Island (Yarmouth ME?) with Jill's sister Jane and her husband Roger.

9/2/15 - Forest city->Burrows. 65 degrees at the base. Humid! Start 6AM, Finish 8:20 (2:20 total). Nice hazy sunrise. Clear at the top with fog in the valleys.

7/31/15 - Tuckermans ravine->Washington->Jefferson->Clay->Washington->down boot spur. Started at 8AM. Top of Washington at 10:15. Back to parking lot at 6PM.

7/29/15 - Mansfield: Wampahoofus->LongTrail South loop. 2:10 (5:45-7:55). Hot and very little wind. Fog in the valleys. About 70 degrees although it is supposed to get up to 90 on this day.

7/26/15 - Forest City->Bad weather bypass past plane (.5 miles)->Monroe trail to clearing (.6)->top->down Forest City. ~8 miles.

7/16/15 - Forest City->Burrows. 50 degrees at base. Start 6:30, End 8:40 (2:10). Fog in the valleys and clear and cool at the top.
