Acadia NP - 6/28

Today I went South of the park along the coast to Belfast. Stopped at a few places along the way. The first stop was Carter Nature Preserve in Surry ME. A short walk around a mud bay area. Good neighborhood walk if you lived there but nothing out of the ordinary.
Then to Fort Knox. 1812 inspired fort that never really got used. Military waste going back to the early 1800's. Interesting large cannons, ammo cellars, furnaces to heat cannon balls. The technology changed during the time the fort was being built so they had to change a lot of the design as they went along. An example is the cannon stations that had to be re-designed when a different type of cannon became prevalent. Right next to the fort is an interesting bridge that goes over the Penobscot river. This has an observation tower that was closed due to the virus. Observation tower is at the top of the cable span on the bridge so it would have a great view I would imagine. The bridge was built in hundreds of sections and then put together at the site. They had one of the sections in a little park area near the bridge.
Then on to Belfast. Nice bike path along water near large marina. Biggest boat hoist I have ever seen. Lots of nice boats including a large cat and a few trimarans.
Back to Acadia at the end of the day as the fog moved in. Short mountain hike and then ocean walk. All near Gorham mountain. Fog rolling in was interesting to watch.
Another full day!

For heating cannon balls so wooden boats would burn

Cannon has hoist to help load it. Big!
