Smugglers Notch

The day started with an attempt at skiing at Stowe. They had one trail top to bottom with snow on it. Warm and the snow wasn't tracked or packed so not very good if you want to turn. Decided that hiking was the better option for the day. The road through Smugglers Notch was still open so I went up to the top thinking about going to Sterling pond. Instead I went on the Mansfield side of the notch and headed up a slide area. Wild area with very large rocks (house size) all over an unstable slide. No trail but about 3/4 of the way up there was a warning sign on a rock in the middle of the slide. You could see the sign had been hit by many rocks. To get to this area park at the trail up to Sterling pond and walk South a little way to the next parking area. Follow blue trail markers and then continue up into a slide area with cliffs on both sides.
After this I went over to the other side of the notch and went up an equally steep area also with unstable rocks for footing. An interesting area due to the large rocks that have fallen over time. Some make it part way down and others go all the way to the bottom of the notch.
It was supposed to be sunny but it turned out foggy with a light drizzle all day. I also went up to the top of Sterling to check out the snow there. Same type of snow as Stowe.

On a rock pretty far up the slide.

Unreal area with giant rocks all over

Lunch at the top of Smuggs. No one there but the door was unlocked so nice place to get out of the wind.

Trying to hang on
