There wasn't enough snow in Standish so we decided to explore NW of us where we knew they had better snow. First stop was the Maine visitor center in Fryeburg ME. Fortunately for us the woman there knew a lot about x country skiing in the area and gave us a number of places to check out at some point. Here is a list of skiing in the area. A star indicates we went there today.
- Roberts Farm Preserve Nordic (www.wfltmsine.org). This is in Norway Maine. 50 min, 36 miles from house. This is next place we should go.
- Inland Woods and Trails (info@woodsandtrails.org). Many miles of skiing or hiking/biking. Bethel Maine.
* Mount Washington Valley Ski Center. This is in North Conway. Maybe 10 miles of groomed and ungroomed trails. Nice woods but sometimes you are near town. $20 when they are open. Today some trails were groomed. We went into the Whitaker Woods area. Powerline Trail Whitaker Woods parking.
* Starks Hill Trails. This is a local Fryeburg area that is mostly for the Fryeburg Academy. It says no skiing mon-fri to keep it open for the students. We went anyway and no one was there. We did meet one person who was leaving when we arrived. He said he skied mid week but stayed out of the way if they were having an event. These trails were very nice. Half of them groomed and very nice hilly woods. Some really fun light powder on the ungroomed trails. You can get here from the Maine Visitor center. Ski about 1 mile on the mountain division trail and walk behind the auto repair place. Picture of auto place below.
- Harris Farm in Dayton ME. Recommended by Erica.
- Bear Notch road off 302 in NH. Park in Bartlett NH. Closed road in winter. Like Smugglers Notch. People ski, walk, snow mobile.
- King Pine ski area? 22km trails ($15). Purity Spring resort also has skiing? 1 hour, 38 miles from house.
- gllt.org. A number of preserves North of Fryeburg in route 5. Heald and Bradley ponds area good place to start.
