Popham Beach Area

Today we were South of Bath in the Popham Beach area. It was sunny and 50. Nice day for walking around although felt colder by the ocean.

The first stop was a 4 mile hike from Morse mountain to Seawall Beach. We got to the beach at low tide which was lucky. The beach was very wide and also very flat. You could see the high tide mark which was up near some rocks. While there is little to no width at high tide it is maybe a thousand feet wide at low tide. We saw many shore birds as well as turkey vultures, a bald eagle, and a very large unidentified raptor. Also saw some seals in the water out in the waves.

Next was Fort Baldwin which is the ruins of a fort first built in the 1600's. Near it us Fort Popham which was built around 1860 and is in good shape. Very thick walls and lots of round corners and granite stairs. One side is in the ocean at this point but holding up well.

Then a quick look at Popham Beach SP which is on the other side of an inlet from Seawall Beach. At low tide you could walk between them but the tide was up by this point in the day.

And then to Hamilton Audubon Society. A mix of woods and marsh near the ocean with some viewpoints at the ocean.

A long day! Interesting though and nice variety of things to see and explore.

Henry decided to stay home and nap in the sun:
