Olympic NP - Day 1

We had time for a quick trip to Olympic NP. We wanted to see the ocean, the rain forest, and the mountains.

The first day we started with an AM hike to Lake Angeles and then further up into the mountains until there was too much snow to continue. A few places up high had groups of wild flowers growing on steep slopes. We made it up to an elevation of 4850. Foggy day with some very light rain off and on. Saw Gray Jays and black capped chickadees near the pond. The fog would lift briefly at various points giving us views of the lake and the peaks up higher.

Just after we finished this hike of 9 miles it rained hard for about 15 minutes. Great timing!

Then we drove up the Hurricane Ridge trail. Foggy most of the way up and then it opened up with views of Mt Olympus and all the surrounding peaks. Went on a hike from the ranger station at the top of the road. Great views of the mountains and saw some deer. Nice trail mostly in snow. Amazing how the weather changed from one side of the road to the other.

The evening involved a nice restaurant near the waterfront in Port Angeles where we were staying. Great pizza and beer. Talked to people we had seen earlier in the day. They were from Mississippi and told us about some of the areas to hike there. Talked about various snakes in Mississippi. Then walked along the waterfront and to a tower that looked back at the mountains and out into the Juan De Fuca straight. You could see Victoria. There were a number of tankers in the area unloading near Ediz Hook which is a spit that goes out a few miles from Port Angeles. A great day. A long day!
