Orcas Island - Massacre Bay, Turtleback

And we are off to Orcas Island. Orcas is one of the San Juan islands. It is the largest of the islands and has the highest hill at 2400 feet. Caroline found a house to rent on the water and within a short walk of Turtleback Mountain Preserve. Great location with kayaking, paddle boarding, and nice walking right from the house.

The first day we explored Eastsound which is a town in the middle of the horse shoe shaped island. Nice beaches there along with restaurants and shops. We also took our first walk around the Turtleback mountain trail system. This is a nice area with some older trees and hills looking out toward the sounds.

The second day was a long walk in the Turtleback area and a visit to Deer Harbor. Lots of Madrone trees which have a red color and no bark on part of the tree.
