Another nice day in the area of Hilton Head.
Savannah Wildlife Refuge:
We had not been to the Savannah Wildlife Refuge before. The Northern half of it is closed. It still left about 10 miles of trails. There is a 5 mile Wildlife Drive which we did on our bikes. This is a dirt road with cars but the cars were going very slow. Safe. Off the loop are three other trails that we biked on. It was a windy day so not a lot of birds but some. Many alligators. At one point we were looking out at some ducks and then noticed a small alligator near us. As we looked closer there were four in the immediate area. There is also a small cedar swamp near the visitor center that was interesting. A good place to go for a half day and probably a lot more birds in a different season. We saw a very large alligator on the shore at one point. Hard to say but 12 or more feet. Very wide also. Uncharacteristically he backed up rather quickly into the water when he saw us. No time for a picture.
Old Town Bluffton
This town used to have mostly cottages for wealthy plantation owners in the early 1800s. It was mostly burned by Union troops in 1863. 15 houses survived the fires and are mostly on Calhoun street. A nice town to walk around with a waterfront park on the May River. There is also the Church of the Cross which is a gothic church built in 1857 for $5000.
Pinckney Wildlife Refuge
It is always fun to bike around Pinckney. Not many birds today. We mostly rode around the ponds.
