Hilton Head - Beach Day

This was a day of biking around the South shore of the island and some beach time. Holly and Caroline went to Islanders Beach Park. I went to the South shore at Palmetto dunes and then explored in both directions down by the ocean. I then met them at Islanders Beach park. This area is good biking on the island. You don't have to cross many roads and nice bike paths. We learned to take Dillon road from the condo to the South shore area.

In the late afternoon we went to two small parks: Audubon Newhall Preserve and Jarvis Creek Park. Audubon is small and seems to be a work in progress. Some gardens near the parking lot and some trails around a pond. Jarvis Creek Park was interesting. It is a man made pond but stocked with fish that jumped out of the water regularly. They jumped pretty far! Nice walking path and some Egrets and other birds near the shore of the pond. We saw a juvenile eagle at this park and a large hen like bird nesting in the pond (Gallinule?).

  1. We were very fortunate and grateful to be able to stay at David and Autumn's, on Port Royal Sound. It's a nice condo community built around a center area that has 2 pools, tennis courts and lovely gardens. We didn't see gators here but there are gator signs! Across the parking lot from our building, Dolphin, is a cat sanctuary. Ken and I really enjoyed seeing the cats although none were interested in visiting with us. https://allaboutcatshhi.org/
The best things about this location is the ocean that is a bird sanctuary and it borders an interesting park named Mitchellville Freedom Park. It was a community established by and for newly freed slaves. https://exploremitchelville.org/
Oh - and their places is <1 mile from the HHI airport which is where Caroline flew into.

Paved bike trails go everywhere on the island. Caroline borrowed Autumn's bike and Ken and I took ours which made getting some exercise convenient. Although flat! Very flat!
