Hilton Head - Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge

This is a nice park with 14 miles of hiking/biking trails. Lots of birds as this is an island with no development.

Dinner on the other side of the Wildlife Refuge the night before:

Back at Port Royal beach (home for 2 weeks):

Oyster beds

There is a cat area next to the Port Royal condos. Maybe an acre of land with cat houses and many cats who can hang out there or wander around the condos and the nearby trails. They are fed twice a day. Seems like a good life?

Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge:

White Ibis?

At Hilton Head Beach:

And back to Port Royal... a much nicer beach than Hilton Head in my opinion.

  1. Caroline flew in from Seattle to join us on our first full day. The HHI airport is just minutes away from Port Royal Sound. Like Ken and me, Caroline packed way too many clothes like fleece and long pants. We had dinner at Dockside in the Pines and we had good westerly views. Some of the photos reflect more about the A&D's beach. Like oyster beds! I didn't know what they were and learned that they oysters cluster together to reproduce and to have protection from waves and predators. There are interesting scientific articles about the "glue" that oysters produce. These oyster beds are covered by water at high tide and it would hurt to unknowingly step on them. The beach is connected to Mitchelville Freedom Park which also walkable from the bike path (more about bike paths ahead!). This park has attempted to preserve the history of a small self-governed community. Gullahs were the native islanders. Also just around the corner from A&D's is a cat rescue park (allaboutcatshhi.com) and the cats are beautiful and well cared for. They live in their own gated community!

We went to Pinkney Island Nature Reserve. They've got a lot of nature here. The pink grass is lovely. Butterflies. Huge oak trees and other trees covered in Spanish moss. The photos of birds, especially the Ibis, are fun to see in the mini-movie feature of the iPhone. On this day, Caroline, Ken and I walked through much of the park.
