Savannah

Today we decided to go to Savannah for the day.  It is about a 1 hour drive from Hilton Head to Savannah. We went to Fort Pulaski which is on Cockspur island. East of Savannah on the Savannah river. We walked out to see the Cockspur light house. Nice shaded trail with some birds and lots of Palmetto plants. There was scaffolding on the light house so no pictures. It looks like it needs some work! There are a number of other trails on this island but we decided to check out the fort since we also wanted to walk around Savannah.

The fort is interesting. The Union had some rifled cannons that went about 5 miles instead of 1 mile for the non rifled cannons. The Union army set up on Tybee island and barraged the fort with roughly 5000 cannon shots. The walls on two sides had holes in them and the confederate army surrendered since they had a lot of black powder stored inside the fort and once the walls were breached the cannon balls were hitting the far wall that had all the black powder in it. The outside walls still have a lot of damage. Seemed strange to have a fort in such an idyllic area. War amongst the palm trees!

After the fort we went to Savannah. Walked all around town and checked out a number of squares, a cemetery and walked by a number of churches. We went into the St John the Baptist cathedral. Very impressive church with stained glass, paintings, and other art work. There were areas where the houses were very well maintained. Amazing paint work and gardens. Nice city to walk around and it was a perfect blue sky day. We had lunch/dinner at the Fox and Fig Cafe. We found this place by luck. It was a vegetarian place with some unique options. Holly's salad was pretty amazing.

And that ends another day.

I didn't take this picture. This is the Cockspur light house. When we were there it had scaffolding around it.

Cannon damage. You can't really see it but there is still a cannon ball in the wall:

  1. The roadtrip to Savannah was well worth it as you just saw! The salad I had was phenomenal especially as we were pretty worn out and hoping to find a place that head healthy options. Too bad Caroline, who did want to come with us, had to return to Seattle. Not sure if Ken threw in the fact above that Savannah is the third largest US port. They dredge the river so the barges can get through. Probably lots of Christmas presents on the barge we saw.
