After a morning well spent hiking we went to Montezuma Well and after that to Crane Petroglyphs. Montezuma well is an interesting pond in the middle of a desert area that is Spring fed. The waters runs out one side to form a river. The pond has some aquatic species that are found nowhere else. There are a number of native American cliff dwellings around the pond. Down the road about five miles is Crane Petroglyphs National Monument. A large wall of petroglyphs and two rangers who gave us a history of the area and the petroglyphs. There is a rock spire with a slot between it and the wall that directs sun rays onto different parts of the wall at different times of the year. They think this was a type of calendar for planting and harvesting.
This area, about 20 miles South of Sedona, got up to 85 degrees! Sedona had a high of 75 today.
