The long travel days are behind us. Today we got out for a half day at El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico. Large area that also is included conservation areas and Cebolla Wilderness. We did three short hikes. First we drove to the Sandstone Bluffs overlook. Nice views West and South of the monument. You are up on some high cliffs looking down. Then into La Ventura Natural Arch. A 1 mile RT trip to some sandstone cliffs and a large arch. Very nice to be moving some after long drive and many down weeks before the trip. Then a nice trail from the Narrows picknick area up onto the top of a long cliff area. Then to Zuni Acoma trail that goes into a lava area. Many days could be spent in this area of New Mexico. Many days of hiking trails in a number of different areas. Grants NM is the town that is near the main access points.
Lots of long trains were seen while driving through NM. Very active cargo train network.
