Petrified Forest NP

A day of hiking in the painted dessert, looking at lots of petrified wood, hiking in the Blue Mesa area, and petroglyphs. Bright sun and 55 degrees so perfect hiking weather. The park has a number of short trails that are marked on the map. There are also a lot of unmarked trails and large areas you can walk in. In the AM we went down into the painted dessert from the Painted Desert Inn. Unmarked trail into a vast area. The hike of the day went from The Tepees parking lot. It cut through an amazing area of colored hills and up to the Blue Mesa trail. Very nice hike with something to see at all times. We also walked off trail at Jasper Forest for a while. Lots of petrified wood in this area. We saw petroglyphs at Puerco Pueblo and Newspaper Rock. The viewing area at Newspaper Rock is far from the petroglyphs but you could see them with binoculars. An amazing array of petroglyphs.
