Today we visited the State capital: Augusta. We started at the Viles Arboretum. A nice series of trails through woods and meadows and near a few small ponds. We saw a frog, turtle, turkey, turkey babies, and wood chuck. The turkey mama put on a show distracting us from her babies. They also have a visitor center with a stuffed moose and a variety of stuffed birds. Then we went to the library which was pretty amazing. Thick stone building with some impressive reading rooms complete with fire places. We also looked at the stone post office building and the Governor Hill mansion. And a quick stop to look at Fort Western (1754 military outpost) on the Kennebec River. We also walked on the bike path that goes along the Kennebec River. This would be worth returning to with bikes some day. Then on to the Capital Building. An impressive stone structure with many portraits and the best Moth collection I have ever seen. A whole cabinet of Maine moths and another with moths from around the world. The capital is open to the public and we saw where the Senate meets when they are in session. We also walked the Capital Park.
