Katahdin - Abol trail

Weather forecast wasn't good for today but it turned out a lot better than expected. Katahdin was in the clouds most of the day but the clouds cleared for about 20 minutes when I was at the top. I started hiking at 7am which helped as the clouds moved in more in the afternoon. Some light rain off and on and strong winds above tree line but no thunderstorms.

The Abol trail is steep for about 1.5 if its 4.4 mile length. The steep part is a long rock jumble where you need your hands. I strapped my poles to my pack. It takes some focus as there are plenty of opportunities to slip particularly when wet. Going down, as expected, was harder.

I got to the top at 10:00 and walked along the knife edge a little until the clouds got dense. A good day and much cooler which is great. Too hot the last few days.

Next two pictures are the Abol trail at its rock jumble best.

Next two pictures are of model of the area at the ranger station. You can see the steep section of the Abol trail.

Ponds and lakes driving back in the park.

Return to campsite. Katahdin is in the clouds.

Campsite 9. Level. Good one to ask for in the future.
