Today was a day of beaches and a few light houses. We started at our home beach. Campbell's Cove where North Lake connects with the ocean. One of the people at the campground told us that was the place to find sea glass. They were right! Holly collected a fair amount. Windy today so some good ocean waves.
Next to East Point lighthouse. This was moved away from the bank which has eroded away over the years. The old foundation pad is there and it is ready to return to the sea. Saw lots of lobster boats out picking up traps. Also some interesting water birds. We met Roberta, a local, who bird watches and told us about some of the birds, the history of the lighthouse, and even some lobster fishing information.
Next was Basin Head. A nice provincial park with a long beach. A lot of the beaches have red sand. This is the beach of singing sand from high silica content? We didn't hear it sing but Holly tried pretty hard to hear it.
After that on to Souris Lighthouse. This one was very interesting. You could go all the way to the top in what looked like original steep ladder like stairs. They had lots of sea glass and sand from around the world. Also the old mirror light. The whole place smelled like old mineral oil of some kind. It was a museum and lighthouse!
Then to the Souris board walk along the ocean. Some kite surfers here in the 20+ knot winds. They were pretty good at it. We had early dinner at a picnic table near Souris. Holly made local new potatoes which have just been harvested along with beans and some hard boiled eggs in the side. Nice to hang out and do this late afternoon.
Then to Black Pond bird sanctuary for a beach walk. Lots of birds here including a large raptor.
Finally we returned to the same beach we started the day at and found some more sea glass. Weather has been pretty good. They keep saying rain but we had only light sprinkles here and there the last few days. Pretty pleasant with cooler temps. 50 going up to 60.
