Pointsett State Park SC

We drove through the low country this morning going to the Cypress Wetlands in Port Royal. This has a boardwalk that goes around a pond. Some alligators from a distance and a number of birds on the small islands in the pond.

We also stopped at Santee national wildlife refuge. Nice trail here with lots of cedars and cedar knees which are the strange root looking things that come up to a point in the forest floor. This is also the site of a large Indian mound which is a roughly 1000 year old burial site for Indian chiefs.

Arrived at Pointsett State Park around 1:00. The park has a pond and miles of walking trails. This area is hilly and very different from the low country. There is an old mill site here that the CCC discovered when they were doing work. Trying to learn how to walk slower in the heat. It was 80 today but the trails are in the woods so not too hot.

The plan is to go to Congaree NP tomorrow.
