Buckskin Gulch, The Maze

Two great hikes today East of Kanab. They were both off of a rough dirt road called House Rock Valley Road. The first was Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch. Buckskin Gulch is the longest slot canyon in the US and possibly the world at 16 miles. We went in for 5 miles and then returned (10 miles RT). It ranged from water wave like rocks to some large sandstone cliffs in the "opening" and then back. There were petroglyphs right where Wire Pass met Buckskin Gulch. An amazing hike with a great horned owl perched up on a cliff at one point. A couple we met let us use their binoculars and I took a picture of a picture taken by them with a better camera. Hard to turn around on this hike! It just kept going and changing. You could see branches stuck between the two walls 20-40 feet in the air from flash floods. Made you realize you do have to pay attention to weather for this hike.

The second hike was called The Maze. The most unique petroglyphs I have ever seen. A person we talked to, who used to work at Zion said some of them go back 3000 years. Hard to imagine.

After the hikes we drove another 20 miles on the rough road to 89A. We went through the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument and the Kaibob National Forest. An interesting area also but a long slow drive after a long day of hiking.
