Kalob Canyons, Pipe Springs NM

 Taylor Creek Trail: Kalob Canyons.

A very nice 5 mile RT hike following the Taylor Creek into a nice canyon. We extended the hike a little further up the wash at the end. A few 1930's cabins on the way. Many river crossings! Lots of sounds. Water, birds.

Pipe Springs National Monument: A historical monument from the 1850 time frame? Mormans meet Paiuta Indians and throw in the Federal govt. Ends poorly for Indians. Mormans do a little jail time. A large area is desimated by cattle grazing. People move on. Very cool wagons and "fort" built by Mormans to control the spring (water source). First telegraph system in Arizona with some insulators and wires still there. It is Paiuta land now with the NM being a collaboration between Fed govt and Paiuta. The volunteer at the fort was from Williston VT! He and his wife are doing the volunteer and national parks/monuments via an RV. The park gives you site, electric and you volunteer. You can select the parks you are interested in. They sold house and are residents of South Dakota for tax and mail purposes. Interesting life choice.
