Today we went to the Ward Ski Trailhead about 7 miles beyond the Skyway trail we went to a four days ago. Another amazing sunny day. They got about a foot of snow since we were here last. Not that it matters much as there is plenty of snow. This trailhead isn't groomed as often as Skyway and a number of trails are not groomed. A more back woods experience then Skyway. There are more hills here also. There are 300 lakes in Grand Mesa and we saw a half dozen today. Of course they are frozen and covered with many feet of snow. Forgetting your sun glasses would be like forgetting your skis today. Without sun glasses you can't go.
We ran into a local couple skiing and another local hiking in the afternoon and learned a few more interesting things:
Grand Mesa is much cooler in the summer as you would imagine but it is also very wet and buggy June and July. Nice once it dries out in Aug time frame.
Powderhorn is a laid back local downhill place. No lines and skiing like it was in the 80's. There is woods skiing there and worth checking out.
Kokopelli trail is a 140 mile mountain bike ride that goes to Moab. You can ride to it on the bike path from Fruita. So you could ride your bike to Moab from Fruita if you had enough time and energy.
