Canyonlands - Needles

Cold in the AM but warmed up to 45 and mostly sunny. Comfortable for hiking. I started from the Elephant Hill trailhead. There is a 3 mile dirt road to get there that is 1.5 cars wide. At one point there was a significant water crossing which made me a little nervous in a mini van 2500 miles from home. The other driving issue was deer and cows. The road to the park entrance is a spectacular area but open range on the cows and I saw dozens of deer. Twice the deer were crossing the road in a pack. There was a smashed SUV on the side of the road. Looks like they hit a cow?

The hiking route is shown in a picture below. A great hike with multiple areas including a long area of narrow slot canyon. This was on the Joint Trail. This park was not crowded today. Parking half full and you see very few people on the trails. Lots of trails from a few trailheads. This whole area is much more remote than Moab which has turned into a circus. No cell phone coverage all day including the road that goes into the park. Not a lot of plants flowering as it has been so cold. That will likely change next week.

Another cold night tonight. 10-15 degrees.
