The plan today was to drive from Dead Horse SP to Grand Junction. A two hour drive turned into a full day. I stopped at Arches since I was driving by and no permit was required. Maybe because it is early in the season? While crowded and over used it is still an amazing area. All kinds of rock formations and once you get beyond the parking lots the people drop off fast.
I then drove from Moab to Grand Junction via route 128. The first 25 miles or so are along the Colorado River with sand stone cliffs on both sides. Lots of camp grounds and some hiking trails. An area for further exploration. The last 10 miles or so change quickly to a strange hilly prairie area and the road turns to rough pavement.
A cloudy day with light rain here and there. Nice and cool for hiking. Hard to make any forward progress in this area since there is always something to stop and see. It is a strange land.
