Canyonlands: Lathrop Trail

 This trail is spectacular. You can go 22 miles RT all the way down to the river. I went 9 miles RT. The hike starts out in a grass area for about a mile. Flat and not very interesting except for the occasional cactus. Then you move into an area of white and red rocks and after 2.5 miles you get to a canyon overlook. This is when the trail gets really interesting. You hike along a wide ledge with 500 or so feet of rock above you and 1000 foot dropping off below you. The trail continues like this for maybe a mile with amazing views at every turn. Then the trail heads steeply down to the level at the bottom of the cliffs. You can see the river is far away and also lower again in another series of canyons. I turned around at this point. The weather today wasn't as nice as yesterday but OK. Windy with clouds and sun. This is the best trail I have found at Canyonlands.
